Winter Fashion for Moms and Winter Maternity 2023
We are expecting baby number five and this will be my third winter pregnancy. I prefer being pregnant in the winter because summer just gets too hot here, but it is challenging to find comfortable winter maternity clothing. This season’s trend is the oversized look—and one of the signature pieces is the oversized blazer. High-waisted pants and skirts are still in and belts accentuate the waist this season. Obviously, this poses some challenges for those of us whose waist has disappeared under the pregnancy belly!
According to Lydia Tomlinson, stylist and YouTube personality, a great style principle for dressing this season’s trends is to wear oversized pieces in a 2:1 ratio to a fitted piece. However, if everything you are wearing is oversized, then cinch the waist, or pull up the sleeves to create some definition in the silhouette. You can see her helpful videos here.
In my opinion, to adapt this strategy for pregnancy, you can consider the belly as one oversized item. So the ratio of oversized items on your body should be 1:2, the opposite of the current trend. In other words, have one oversized item per two fitted items of clothing. This principle will help to balance the belly size and keep you in style for the season!
Here are some examples of styling the oversized look for pregnancy:
-Slim jeans, slim long-sleeved tee with large chunky cardigan
-Slim pants, slim long-sleeved tee with long sleeveless cardigan (or furry vest)
-Bell-bottomed or wide pants, t-shirt, with cropped sweater (aka bolero)
-Oversized sweater with pregnancy leggings
-Long slim dress with oversized cardigan
winter trends and styling tips for women 2023
Here below I list the trends as I’ve seen them in high-end shopping boutiques (specifically, Net-a-Porter). Besides the consistent neutrals and monochromatic matching, there are some eclectic layering and colour-matching fads that are in style right now. You could summarize 2023 winter style using the word “sloppy,” on the other, you could use the word “relaxed” (check out this article on layering for winter). It’s like we all have to head back to the office and don our blazers again but don’t really want to get uptight about it.
Enjoy the trends!
