As I took out my winter items this year, I started wondering what is still in fashion. And I discovered at fashions haven'’t changed dramatically in the last couple of years. The biggest thing to change is the pants, as you can see below. The feminine silhouette has become less top-heavy and more balanced, think “loose” clothing, cinched at the waist with a belt or elastic. The biggest fad that I have been seeing most regularly are shoes—sneakers, especially with white soles. In the wintertime, especially here in Canada, sneakers are replaced with the lug-sole boot or the very ubiquitous, Blundstone.

As you know, I am not much of a shopper or buyer. I just like to know what’s in style! As a mom, I want to have an effortless and easy style that looks “with it.” I find it usually takes just one or two pieces to update my wardrobe—a trendy pair of pants or a sweater. Or, some snazzy new jewelry or a stylish haircut. And this year, it’s really that simple. A lot of the suggestions below can be done using pieces from your very own wardrobe. Or, you can use these ideas to do a thrift shopping excursion. Skip the lines and order online? I’ve simplified it for you this year with some links to some of my favourite Amazon pieces. You can update your pieces and support the show, or you can just get an idea of what is hot for winter 2022.

Black and White

This style speaks for itself, but you can wear a fully monochromatic outfit or have a snazzy contrast top. This trend could be as simple as a white shirt with a black jacket, or a white dress and leggings with a black jacket. White skirts and white pants were in fashion this year, so you could pair them with a black sweater for the winter. This black and white trend has been around for at least five years now, I think that’s because it’s an easy way to look chic with hardly any fuss.

My personal favourite is a pair of black pants for the winter. I have black maternity pants that are stretchy but look a little fancy—I can dress these up if I’m going out somewhere or dress them down if I’m just staying at home. If you’re post-partum, black on black is slimming while it looks classy. Pair your outfit with some glimmery jewelry.

Olive Green

This colour is versatile and so easy to wear. It pairs easily with the black and white trend and matches with so many other colours. In the past we may have called this colour “khaki” or army green, but I think the new name for it implies that it’s something that can be dressed up or down. Certainly, a pair of olive green pants can be dressed up with some black heels. Or a big comfy olive green sweater goes naturally with a pair of comfy brown leather lug-sole boots.

According to Pantone LLC, the global authority on colour and provider of professional colour standards for all design industries, there are a number of brighter colours that are “in” for autumn/winter 2021/2022. Besides olive green, there are also yellow, pale rosette (light pink), fuchsia, grey, red, dusty blue, dark indigo, clover green (aka “leprechaun), brown, cream and tan. You can see the colours here.

But as we well know, colours come in and out of style all the time and if you want a timeless wardrobe, neutrals are best. The thing about olive green is that it acts as an injection of colour while being extremely versatile to wear.

Athleisure

This trend has also been around for a few years, but the new name for it right now is “apres-ski” which is French for “after skiing.” Think big cable-knit sweaters and anything that looks fuzzy and cozy, including some outrageously patterned sweaters and of course those casual comfy pants.

Cable Stitch Sweaters Apres Ski

This blog post explains with photos how you can dress up your very casual pants. Let’s say you stepped out of bed with the baby, slipped on your most comfy clothes, and now you have to go out and about and don’t want to look like you just got out of bed. So what do you do? Throwing on a dress shirt and cardigan is one idea. Another idea is to throw on a big fuzzy sweater. Or, if you have a furry vest, wear any long-sleeved shirt and let the vest do the talking. A nice pair of shoes and some earrings will quickly make you look like you’re completely put together. This is the post-pandemic era, ladies.

Full-length pants are back

Someone told me the other day that skinny jeans are just for Millennials, but I can’t help but still like the way they look tucked into my boot or paired with an oversized sweater. Throw a little pizzazz into your mommy routine by getting some faux leather leggings! They would look cute with an oversized sweater and I’m sure they’re easy to clean spills up from. In any case, the trend right now—especially with college and university students—includes wide-legged pants, mom jeans, high-waist jeans, and now full-length jeans. Yes, the trend the last few years has been to crop the pants just above the ankle. Even through the winter. Now, pants have mercifully reached their full length, and that’s ok.

Also trending in high fashion are cashmere pants (hand wash only?) and ribbed sweater pants. I’m also seeing a lot of lighter coloured pants which is why I included some straw-coloured jeans (they’re the colour of cashmere but so much more practical!)

Add some shimmer or sparkle

Bigger jewelry is in—bangles, larger chains, brooches, and statement earrings. I think we will still be seeing layered necklaces of minutiae jewelry for some time, though we might be seeing layered chunky jewelry.

According to the Zoe Report, runways have been full of throwbacks—think 80s and go from there: chains, pearls, and colourful over-the-top ornamentation. At the same time, we’re also seeing a Y2K resurgence with beeds, cutsie charms, pastel colours, plastic bangles, and a mismatch of colours. In other words, have some fun with it. I find a bright pair of earrings brighten my day and make my face look more awake. The layered necklace look is easy to do as well, you can wear any two necklaces together and it’s such an easy thing to do to update your look (it’s super cute!)

Sheer layers

This trend has been around now for a few years as well. Sheer clothing layers easily and looks fancy without a lot of fuss, like ironing. Below I’ve listed a sleeveless top below because it can easily be paired with a thick sweater or a structured jacket.

Makeup

Many places in the world (not all) are now dropping their masks, so we have a return to lip-centred styles: the bold red pout, darker shades for winter, or softer rosy hues for those who are done with the no-makeup look but don’t like going over the top. Mask or not, eyes are a focal point otherwise (or as well), with smoky eyes, bold eyeliner, and waterline looks. With another move away from the no-makeup-makeup look, rosy cheeks are also trending, as well as bold eyeshadows.

The Lug-Sole Boot

A lug-sole is a “thick rubber sole that has deep indentations in a pattern designed to provide good footing and is used on sport and work shoes” (Merriam-Webster). Now think work boot with a short or taller heel and you’ll have an idea of what is in fashion for this year. These pair nicely with the wider silhouette and do a good job of making your legs look slimmer.

They’re even actually practical—with the deep indentations in the sole you’ll have a better grip on ice and wet pavement. Some are even waterproof. We have a lot of slush and puddles in my hometown, so the waterproof boots have been great for going for a walk with the boys in any kind of weather. I bought Naturalizer, they’re a great price, but not that durable, depending on the model.

Hairstyles

Think bobs, lobs stopping at the shoulder blade, ruffled syles, as well as straight-as-a-pin styles with bangs.

There has also been a return to the 70s style long-hair plus curtain bangs look. Keep your hair wavy or straight and sleek, but look for a blunt bottom cut with hardly noticeable layers.

There’s no need to hide your curls as well, let them loose with a long curly shag and bangs, or let them go crazy with a short bob.

winter-wear

Leather is in fashion this year, some are saying top and bottom leather is in. I don’t like to overdo it myself (look at that mom of four!) but a little bit of leather is fun and well, easy to maintain (especially if it’s not actually leather). It’s a little more dressy than the denim jackets (or shackets) that we’ve been seeing, but the faux leather biker jacket is a nice bit of structure that can up any outfit from casual to chic.

As for winter hats, I have been seeing a lot of beenies with a fuzzy fur pom-pom (paired with a hot drink in a forest backdrop). It’s as ubiquitous as Starbucks but it’s cute, warm, and still very stylish. Trending as well is the felt or wool wide-brimmed hat.
