Bring on the hot weather!

Dear Moms—you’ll find it easy to stay on trend with this little summary of 2025’s best summer fashions. Whether you are pregnant, postpartum, breastfeeding, or somewhere in between, there are options for you! I will guide you through the main pieces and colours of the summer.

I like modest trends, and by that I mean a classy look that draws attention to beauty and personality.

versatile moms:

I’m selecting trends that are versatile and beautiful for a mother who has to bend down and wipe up… “stuff” throughout the day, who play with their kids, feed them, and like to look beautiful while doing it.

For breastfeeding moms:

I prefer flowy tops over tight-fitting ones. With a flowy top, you can breastfeed more discretely without a cover and without exposing your back. I also find that breastfeeding makes me sweat, so loose-fitting top helps hide perspiration. White and lighter colours are also ideal because if your shirt gets milk or other fluids on it, stains are less noticeable.

options, options:

After I had a few children, I stopped buying specifically maternity cothing and instead invested in clothing that works through many stages from early pregnancy, to breastfeeding, to postpartum. Flowy tops are great options, as are button-down dresses.

For pregnant moms:

I love the versatility and air-flow of dresses when I am pregnant. To avoid looking like a tent, I avoid extra-flowy dresses with no shape. My favorites are empire waist sleeveless dresses and long skirts with pregnancy elastic waistbands.

Dresses

I love how dresses are still in style, especially long and flowing dresses. On a budget, I’ve been able to find some of these pretty summer items on Amazon and Winners, as well as at the thrift store.

The floral print is still in, as well as extra feminine touches like puffy sleeves and lace. Belts are in fashion right now, so one ensemble that is trending is the belted cotton dress.

If you are breastfeeding, another great option is a button-down dress. Alternatively, I have paired a flowy blouse with a long skirt. At a wedding, this ensemble made breastfeeding easy and discreet.

Romanticism is having a comeback as well as feminine silhouettes and colours.

shirts

If you are wondering if your shirts are trendy, don’t worry because all the basics you got last season (or have had in your wardrobe forever) are still in vogue. Basics are timeless, versatile pieces that don’t have any logos or detailing.

For several seasons now, the simple white tank top has been the “it” item of the season. With this summer’s romantic trend, consider adding some feminine touches to the basics: a delicate gold necklace and stacked rings. If romance is your style, you will be amazed to find lots of shirts with ruffles, puffy sleeves, and dainty collars.

Tucking in your shirt and pairing it with a belt is a popular trend.

colours

Look for turquoise, light and dark coral, all white outfits, and suede accents. Pantone has named the colour of the summer “mocha mousse” (think the colour of a latte or you can see it here). This brown shade or any neutral looks great paired with white, whether it’s a white top or a pair of white jeans.

White jeans are a great closet item for the summer, as my friend Miriam shows in this photo.

Coming into fall, we may see the burgundy trend again as well as leather accents. Last winter, textures dominated and I think this summer textures will also be on trend with more breezy knits and in accessories like pins or other decorative add-ons. You can add textures to your outfits with a leather purse, a scarf, a belt, or with metallic jewellery.

Look classy the easy way with a monotone outfit.

@enginakyurt

Another easy way to look put-together is to pair neutrals together. Beige and white are a great summer combo.

jewellery

All sorts of shiny metallic touches add a fancy touch to an outfit and are an easy way to look more on trend this season. Consider metallic button earrings, chunky chain necklaces, as well as bangles and cuffs.

@samahosseini

Metallic touches add a touch of class to any outfit.

Shoes

While it is still popular to wear sneakers, and white sneakers at that, I am seeing a little more colour in the sneaker trend, but usually in subtle colours and monotone. Continuing the comfort trend, loafers are back again this summer. But new to the scene are pointy shoes, which I imagine we’ll be seeing more of in the future. These pair nicely with a pair of loose trousers or flowy summer pants.

Another trend that is coming back from when I was a teenager are the ballet flats. These are minimalist, easy-to-pair shoes that are comfortable and versatile for any occasion.

As for sandals, the chunky and strappy look is still in fashion. Last year, gladiator sandals made an appearance and this year, we have jelly flats—basically plastic mesh sandals.

shorts and pants

Pants continue to be wide-leg and high-rise with a number of variations, including bell-bottoms! Yes, they’re finally making a comeback. Then we have cargo style pants cinched at the ankle and other tapered boho pants. As for jeans, the trend is still to have pale blue or white colouring.

A new thing that is becoming more popular is to wear pants and even long shorts or skirts and dresses with a belt.

@markadriane

Baggy trousers are cinched at the waist, often with a belt, and worn with a loose-fitting blouse.

skirts

Bubble skirts are back, a look that I think can only be paired with a more structured shirt—making the look a little challenging if you are breastfeeding. However, long skirts are still in fashion as are midi-length and these can be more easily paired with a loose-fitting top.

Pleated skirts are still in season. I wear my pleated skirt all year round and I am very happy with its versatility. In the winter I can pair it with a chunky sweater, and in the summer I can wear it with a tucked-in t-shirt or a knitted tank top.

I think the feminine trend is great and skirts, especially longer skirts, make great mom-wear because they are comfortable and can allow us to switch from casual to formal very easily.

In the fall I predict we will continue to see leather skirts and suede skirts. I purchases my first faux leather skirt and have found it easy to pair with other items in my wardrobe. However, it does not translate well into the summer! Already I have to pull myself “up” rather than slide out from my driver’s seat when I am wearing it!

Skirts are easy to style with a basic t-shirt.

accessories

This season, add a belt to your outfit. A simple black belt with a silver metal buckle is versatile and can add class to any outfit. A thin black belt pairs nicely with a summer dress.

As for sunglasses, the oval look is still in vogue, as are cat-eye and D-frame. D-frame sunglasses give a bit of a vinatage look, they can be either geometric or curved with the bottom part of the sunglasses narrowing to give a slight but less exaggerated cat-eye. This video helps you figure out which shape of sunglasses suit your face.

D-frame sunglasses flatter round or heart shaped faces.

hairstyle

Short, shaggy hairstyles have been popular for the last few years, but sites like Glamour predict that hairstyles will move more dramatically towards the shag. I have seen one lady recently with a mullet, but again, I live in a pretty trend-conservative town.

Of course, one of the best trends for moms is the hair au naturel—yes, no more primping and flattening, you can just grow it long and leave it down.

If you have an event to go to, the princess hair updo is back in fashion (remember the 90s?). Simply put your hair in a ponytail or fancier bun and let a few wispy pieces romantically frame your face. Not sure how to do it? Here’s a helpful tutorial.

An easier way to fix up your hair when you need it pulled back quickly is the braided ponytail. I have been seeing it everywhere, and it’s as easy to do as it looks put-together.

makeup

It’s kind of incredible, but blush and eyeshadow are back. I have seen dusty turquoise eyeshadow on one lady, but have yet to see this trend become mainstream in my hometown. I am seeing blush come back and I love this trend, though I find bronzer works better for my own skin tone.

Speaking of skin, the trend is a more matte look and less shiny—which was fashionable in the recent past.

Cosmopolitan magazine claims that bold lips are going to be a hit this year, especially the colour cherry—which I suppose is a bit of a continuation of the burgundy trend this past fall. As for other colours, I am enjoying a pastel shade that really lights up my outfits and is bold in a different way from the dark shades I like to wear in the winter. Whatever colour you choose, consider stepping away from the lip liner and going for a more natural blended or blurred look this season.

Another trend that is “trending” but I have yet to see in my hometown is colourful mascara. I think this is a fun and quirky trend, reminding me of my high school days when some girls wore edgy blue mascara.

I know the natural trend is still in fashion, but after a bad night or with a tough day ahead, adding a little colour to your face is a little like having a coffee—it wakes you up and gets you ready for the day!

bathing suits

I have been so pleased to see more classy and modest swimsuit options. Though my local bathing suit store has at the most tankinis—which are fine—I was very pleased to find a swimdress on Amazon for a decent price. And the sizing was accurate!
